RFV Acceptance
posted Monday, May 03, 2004 - 04:16 PM (#16668)
I took my Republicans for Voldemort shirt [goats.com] with me on two short trips recently. The first trip was to Boise, Idaho [cityofboise.org], a very conservative and mostly mormon town. The other was to Eugene, Oregon [eugene.or.us] a very liberal college town.

In a short period of time in Eugene I encountered two completely different people who praised my shirt. One person already had the bumper sticker, and the other was going to order a RFV shirt when he got home.

I had different reactions in Boise. A few of my dad's liberal friends were confused since they didn't know anything about Voldemort, and a very small group of people smiled. I imagine most people were thinking, "Ah, a fellow Republican; perhaps I should look into this Voldemort fellow."

Have any others had interesting reactions to this or any other Goats shirts? Have you noticed people you don't know wearing Goats shirts? I've seen a few Wigu and Diesel Sweeties shirts around, but no Goats yet.

I wore my evil cock t-shirt to work. Some people--I just tell them, "It's an evil cock!" and they chuckle. But some people there, I felt I shouldn't be so crass, so I explain about how Diablo is an evil chicken, and that he is a character in my favorite web comic, Goats (pointing to the arm url).

Most people I've found also quite enjoy the litany of beer t-shirt. Especially the younger folks. I've also polled a few people on how they might react to "My killer robot skull-fucked your honors student". I still don't think I could get away with wearing that at work.

I haven't seen anyone out wearing any goats stuff here in San Jose, but I don't get out much.

This isn't an RfV acceptance story, but my Hover Dachshund shirts gets a fair bit of notice. I even had one person look at it, pause for a moment, and then say, 'Oh. From Crab City.' and walk away.

Most people just ask for an explaination.

I've had a couple of weird reactions to my evil cock shirt. Mostly people say something like "Oh, so you're evil? Hur-hur." But twice, I've had people think Diablo was ... a duck. One strange German fellow I work with actually thought it was Donald Duck.

And bizarrely enough, I too have run into a few people who actually have read goats.

This past weekend I went down to visit my family and wore both my "Destroy Phobos" shirt, and my RFV shirt (not at the same time).

A few of my family members (having gone to Catholic school in the 50s and 60s) thought that that I was trying to destroy fear. When I explained that it was a moon of Mars, they didn't get it and changed the subject. My brother though wants one to wear in his astronomy class. My RFV also elecited responses from the very conservative political members of my family. I expalined he was the "bad guy in Harry Potter" and they left it at that, but strangely my grandfather (the most political of all) didn't even seem to notice the shirt.

The only response I've gotten when wearing my evil cock shirt is, "Why is he evil?"

I responded, "He's just drawn that way," and directed her to the URL.

Vaguely related, have any of you noticed that the evil cock becomes "live" with a backwards e when viewed in a mirror? Every time I see this shirt in a mirror a thunderous voice in my head announces, "Live, from New York...Diablo!"

i've never seen anyone around my town with a goats t-shirt, nor met anyone else that reads it. i take pride in my special special shirt.

speaking of which, i wore my monotremes&obscenities shirt out one day. ooh the stares. i live in a fairly religious and conservative city. the best response was from a lady running the counter at the sally ann thrift store. she said "i don't appreciate the t-shirt. i don't like being told that. i just wanted you to know."

i looked back, said "oh." and then finished paying and left. there was no scene, and no firey finger of god, but it pleased me none the less.

I wore my Skull-Fuck babydoll for the first time today, I got it yesterday, and now I'm really wishing I had this shirt when I was single. A guy hit on me, after reading the shirt, got my email, then CAME BACK to talk to me some more. I was studying in a chia lounge. or whatever they are called.

So thank you Jon, for making a shirt that will get me a date.

My bf made me take pics of the shirt and email them to him (he lives 3 hours away) and if they all weren't so bad of the shirt I would post them/send them to Jon. That, or having Zamphire make suggestive comments once is enough for me.

And no, I'm not encluding a handy-dandy link to said thread. Because I'm mean like that.

I wear my Momtremes & Obscenities shirt hashing [gthhh.com] as much as possible. Inevitably someone will happily say, "Fuck you." I will be wearing the killer robot shirt to the hash as well.

The RFV, Phobos and Self-Centered Universe shirts always get a chuckle or "who's Voldemort?" or "What's Phobos?" Seems like when the joke is explained the humor evaporates, but I always point them toward the website, no matter how square they seem.

Once I wore my Kittens = Pop Tarts shirt when my wife dragged me to Peir 1 and some lady asked me as I walked by "Cat equals cookie?"

"No, kittens equal Pop Tarts," I said. "Want to read the back?"

Why, just last night I was wearing my brand new Surly t-shirt in my managerial finance class and the professor said, "Surly, eh Matthew?"

"As always."

A couple years ago I was wearing my Diablo shirt while shopping and the ladies at the cosmetic counter thought it was great. They identified with the 'not cute, evil' message.

More recently I've been wearing my killer robot shirt. I got it just in time to wear it to my only in class final of the semester. Unfortunately no one really noticed, not even my honours supervisor whose class it was. A couple of my drinking buddies have found it hilarious and have both been directed to goats. Most of my other friends just give me a strange look or try to ignore it. I can't wait to get my Oliver t-shirt.

In sydney the only people I have seen with goats paraphenalia are people that I have bought goats paraphenalia for.

However out of all of the ones I own (Not evil dammit, Cold War, Zen, Evil, Future Monkey) the future monkey gets really conistent weird looks.

I don't really get it but it is to a level which is so noticeable that co workers walking down the street with me notice that people are staring...

When and where were you in Eugene? I would have been happy to meet up with you wearing my own RFV t-shirt had I known in advance! My mom has the RFV bumper sticker on the back of her truck and has received much praise as well.

I've been wearing my "Jesus helps me trick people." t-shirt from DieselSweeties [clango.org] recently. Not only is it humorous, it looks pretty good on me too.

I saw the pixel skull shirt on someone once, but that was it. I think it was a combination Diesel Sweeties and PvP shirt. It's a white skull on a black shirt (like Francis in PvP wears), but it was pixelly like DS. I have to specify, because they also did a pixel Skull shirt, featuring the troll from PvP.
