It's not Snow Crash [goats.com], but it is a start [scifi.com].

But do you ever see a person leave a cathedral toting a to-go box?

Honestly, I would have thought that was one of the least filmable of Stephenson's books.

On the other hand, I suppose it offers lots of opportunities for spectacular visuals. And it's fairly short.

You underestimate Hollywood and the Sci-Fi channel's ability to completely misinterpret and "re-imagine" anything.

I thought they did a fantastic job 'un-imagining' Dune.

You've got something there...

Woody as Nell, Arnold as Miranda, and David Spade as Hackworth.

I thought they did a fantastic job 'un-imagining' Dune.

I saw part of the Sci-Fi channel production, and was approximately as bored by it as I was by the book. So maybe it was well done?

I don't want to say i didn't enjoy the Dune series immensely, put it could put me to sleep while read on the bus. Diamond Age kept me awake and interested while the ride buzzed right along. Maybe it's good i was willing to read the six Dune novels by Frank Herbert when i was a teenager, and perhaps more easily entertained. Dune only had a few climaxes, as far as i remember.

I want to see The Big 'U' - Even though Stephenson likes to pretend it doesn't exist, I'm incredibly amused by it every time I read it...

That's why I liked it, actually.

Although I do understand Neal's position - the book is, well, very Stephenson-ish. Which means it highlights both his strong points and his weak ones.

It could make a tremendously amusing film, if you got a decent scriptwriter to tighten up the material - not a lot of really flashy effects needed, and plenty of action to move the plot along.

That's why I like it so much too I think, it's just strange enough to be probable...

You've got a great array of characters, no one 'star' to focus the picture on.

And just imagine the stereo battles in full THX certified splendor...

While charming, and featuring Jeremy Piven, PCU lacks the pervasively neurotic feel of Stephenson.

S'a good flick, though. I haven't seen that in... god, years.
