Whoa!
posted Thursday, June 22, 2006 - 09:52 PM (#34996)

All of a sudden, I'm down from 50 karma points to 47. What happened? Was it something I said? Don't you love me?? (sniff)

Melodramatics aside, I'm curious. Where did I get downmodded? Is anyone else seeing downmods of me on their meta-moderation? I wouldn't see them, obviously. Or did someone offer a comment on a thread on which he/she had upmodded me three times?

Ah, the mysteries...

If you don't see the downmods in your Comment history, perhaps another explanation is related to meta-moderation? If you recently moderated some posts, then a bunch of meta-moderators thought your choices were "unfair", perhaps all of the meta-moderation would affect your total?

I just pulled this theory out of my ass. I suspect only Jon or Phillip could answer you unambiguously.

On an altogether sepaparte note, did anyone else get a message today that he/she did not have permission to metamoderate? Or have I somehow lost metamod privileges?

In Response to Llamarama (#35099):

If you have already Meta-moderated very recently (i think perhaps within the past 24 hours) you can not do so again. Repetition is forbidden until a certain period has passed. Try again tomorrow!

Actually, this glitch has been happening to me for many weeks, i just didn't bother to mention it to Jon or Phillip because it wasn't a big deal, and because i have more apathy than urge. Ever since some time in April or May (?) the "Have you Meta Moderated Today?" question has been prompting me repeatedly, pretty much every time i empty my cache and check the forums again.

In the past (during the era prior to this spring) it used to prompt me once and only once per day (i think it was prompting me at Midnight Goats Standard Time, actually). Now it pesters me incessantly.

My solution is to ignore it if i check the forums more than once or twice per day. Software Gremlins only exist if you believe in them! Or were those Software Faeries? Either way...

Hm, yeah, displaying a history of moderations upon oneself in chronological order would be neat in the "appealing to an obsessive RPGer's need for validation through stats" way.

It'd also be a good way of seeing when people approved of older things you said once you've already capped at 50 and can't really notice easily when you've gained positive feedback.

But it's a mostly useless feature that only plays to the active community's egos, and therefore mostly a waste of Phillip's time.

However, it does encourage the already-goatsloving active community to come to the boards more often and check up, thereby creating more pot-stirring forum noise, thereby encouraging new people to post more, thereby growing the community... thereby possibly making it a very fruitful waste of time. Also, the query should be very simple, unless moderation is done in a hella weird way.

Anyways, I'm not really for or against such hypothetical things, but I have to admit... I was *way* more active before I hit the cap. After all, getting numeric levels in things is such a great thing to the twisted geek lizard-brain that some of our brethren will waste away entire lifetimes on MMOs for the small endorphine rush that accompanies it.

Just some thoughts. I've been thinking about this sorta community-activity-inducing stuff a lot lately over at the forums I'm the Code Monk behind.
