Super-Advance T-Shirts: New Store and Nav Stuff

Thursday, January 09, 2003 - 11:40 AM

Super-Advance T-Shirts are here! Screen-printed on gray cotton T-shirts, the Toothgnip Zen shirt (the same shirt included in 2002's Super-Premium package) are now available to you commoners. And premium members save two dollars off the price if you're craving a second shirt. We've also made some changes to our Store and to the site's main navigation. Read on for more details.

We've wanted to offer screen-printed color T's for some time now, and now that we have a convenient way to do it, we're happy to offer our new limited-run Super-Advance T-Shirts. These were printed by Brunetto T-Shirts, and the quality is outstanding. We ordered a few extra (read: limited quantity) shirts when we did last year's Super-Premium End-of-Year package, primarily so we'd have them to sell at conventions and such, but we also figured that it would be a great way to test the demand for similar items on the site. If they sell well, then we're going to try to offer a new design every 3-4 months (replacing the old design). So make sure you get yours soon, because they won't be around forever.

To accomodate the new t-shirts, we've made some modifications to the store, including a new look and a new cart system for non-CafePress items (such as the Super-Advance T-Shirts and the hardcover books). Take a look and let us know what you think.

Finally, we revamped our site-wide dynamic navigation a bit. It was a bit unwieldy before, and while it looked cool, it just wasn't efficient or useful. I removed the nearly-useless tertiary nav, and changed the secondary level from images to text. The removal of excess HTML, javascript and images means that the pages load and render faster, perform better, and every page is about 30k lighter. I'm much happier with it, and I hope you are too.

In related news, Litany of Beer Steins [cafeshops.com] are on sale -- $3 off the regular low price.

Thanks for adding the Member's only hobnobbery forum to the dynamic nav also. Much more convenient to me. And the fasterness is very nice. Gwork!

One of the great things about the text-based secondary nav is that it'll be much easier to maintain -- adding or removing links will be a cinch.

Am I supposed to be able to see 'Member' under the pop-up under the Forums navigation item?

I see the premium main navigation item, but the only sub-items under forums that appear or are even in the javaScript source are 'goats news', 'the pub', 'ring of fire', 'blatant self-promotion' and 'patent pending'. I mean, I can get to the Members forum. Just not directly from the 'forums' navigation menu.

At home, I'm using IE 5.2 for Mac OS X. I didn't check the JS at work, but the view was the same on IE 6 for Windows.

Hopefully you can work out the logistics, because it sounds like a great package! Although, you realize that you're creating huge expectations for the SPEY packages - I mean it's going to be tough to keep topping it every year.

Oh, and the nav update is pretty cool too.
